The company, founded by Dimitrios Tsampouras in 1981, initially operates as a publishing and commercial house, under the name of its founder.
In 1992 we buy our STARLAB portable planetarium and begin our wonderful journey into the world of Astronomy. The planetarium is mainly an educational medium which gives students the opportunity to get to know the science of Astronomy and acquire some basic knowledge. Since 1992 we have visited hundreds of schools across the country and participated in dozens of events organized by municipalities, cultural institutions, summer camps etc. Indeed, out portable planetarium was one of the most popular attractions of the “Agora” program under the Cultural Olympiad 2001-2004.
In 1995 we imported in Greece the first KONUS telescopes and ventured to gradually orientate our business towards amateur Astronomy. As a result, in 1999 the company is renamed to PLANETARIUM of Thessaloniki.
In December 2002, we translate into Greek the famous book NightWatch – the ultimate guide for the beginner amateur astronomer and a solid basis for the development of amateur Astronomy in Greece. This publication was followed by Greek translations of globally known books, such as: The Monthly Sky Guide, The Universe and Beyond, Astrophotography, Visions of the Cosmos, Moon Observer’s Guide, The Backyard Astronomer's Guide. Additionally, we published academic and children’s books. The content of all our publications comes from Natural and Environmental Sciences.
Today, PLANETARIUM of Thessaloniki is the largest importer and distributor of astronomical equipment in the Balkans, thanks to the trust of our customers and partners throughout these years. Thanks to its diverse and highly efficient staff, which includes astrophysicists, economists, marketers and others, the company can create reports for large scale projects, like observatories, permanent planetariums, etc.
Beside the members of the Greek astronomical community, who express their trust on a daily basis, our clientele includes: Universities, Managing Authorities for Protected Areas and National Parks, National Security and Defense Agencies, popular retail chains, an extensive reseller network in Greece and Cyprus, etc.
Moreover, worldwide acclaimed manufacturers of astronomical and optical instruments put their trust in our company. International companies such as: Celestron LLC. USA, Synta Technology Corporation (Skywatcher) Taiwan, Tele Vue Optics Inc. USA, Carl Zeiss AG Germany, Baader Planetarium GmbH Germany, Science Interactive Group LLC USA, Kowa Optimed Deutschland GmbH, Levenhuk Inc. CZECH REPUBLIC, have signed with us agreements of official or/and exclusive representation.
All these collaborations we have in Greece, Cyprus and internationally in combination with our well-trained staff and the many years of our experience in promoting observational instruments allow us to look to the future with optimism. Our goal is to bring as many people as possible closer to Astronomy, hoping they will discover the truth and the beauty of the starry night.
